You can’t talk about innovation in electric bass amplification without mentioning Phil Jones. This consummate bassist and acoustic engineer has a long history in the design and development of high-end cabinets and speakers. Initially he dedicated himself to the “High End” sector, being the creator of monitors as respected in the sector as the Acoustic Energy AE1, used in Abbey Road studios.
With a new approach, he choose to use only 5″ speakers as the perfect solution for bass amplification, as he has shown, loudspeakers with that diameter are lighter, move faster and deform and overheat less, avoiding the main reasons why a loudspeaker isn’t efficient. He doesn’t think that the mix of loudspeakers for bass and treble (woofers and tweeters) is the right approach, since the mix of materials and the overlaps of frequencies between components (and the use of crossovers) are largely responsible for unpleasant and strange sounds. The Phil Jones 5-inch speakers (which, by the way, are not aluminum, but are painted) reproduce linearly frequencies from 25Hz to 15kHz.
Any amplifier created by Phil Jones, is perfect for use both live and in studio, due in large part to a suitable weight coupled with a clear and powerful sound ideal for any style.
